Icy Strait Point & Hoonah
Alaska

July 19, 2023

Icy Strait Point and the small village of Hoonah are on Chichigof Island, a place with more bears than people.  We took the Whales, Wildlife and Bear Search tour and it was exciting!

Our whale tour started off with a pod of 6 Orcas (they don't normally see them) and was then followed by Humpback whales feeding by making bubble nets.  Wow!

We then went to the forest to see bears, along with our armed guards to protect us.  We did see a few bears but, fortunately, they were a ways off.  Everyone was safe!

Brown and Grizzly are common names for the same bear species, Ursus Arctos; the difference between the two is geographic location, which influences diet, size, and behavior. Those that live in coastal areas of Alaska are called Brown Bears, while typically inland bears that have limited or no access to marine-derived food resources are often smaller and called Grizzlies.
